Shakespeare invested money in the Globe Theatre in 1599. The Theatre was built by a contractor called Peter Street at the behest of Richard and Cuthbert Burbage. The Burbages were unable to use their oldest theatre, The Theatre, because of legal wrangles with their landlord, and so they had it dismantled and the wood used to make a new theatre. However, they needed more cash so they called upon the members of their theatre company, The Lord Chamberlain's Men to make an investment in the building. Four responded, including William Shakespeare. The Burbages had a 25% share each and the other 50% was held by the other four in equal shares. The Lord Chamberlain's Men had been founded five years earlier by a group including the Burbages and Shakespeare, as well as a number of others. This theatre was destroyed by fire on June 29, 1613, and no pictures of it were made at the time.
