What did ancient Sparta think of Athens?

Athens' feelings towards Sparta could differ from person to person and most important from time period to time period. For example, the story of the Battle of Thermopylae was considered very heroic but sometimes Spartan culture was made fun of in plays but in the same play Spartans could be seen as admirable (Aristophanes' Lysistrata, for example). Also, of course, if Athens was at war with Sparta, they would have a much different opinion of them. But one thing that they were very known for was the fact that they were supposed to be very brief with their words with a dry wit, the etymology for the word "laconic" is a reference to Sparta.

What were similarities and difference between Athens and Sparta?

Sparta and Athens had many differences and similarities in their government. Only a few Greek city-states had kings. Sparta had two kings, usually cousins or brothers. One would stay home and the other would go off to fight wars. Athens created the first democratic system and many other city-states copied them. Athenian democracy did not give power to everyone. Most of the people in Athens couldn't vote, including women, slaves, foreigners, and children.

What do Athens Greece and Sparta Greece have in common?

They both were very sophisticated. Spartans became scholars at a young age compared to athenians became scholars at later ages. Spartans however were also taught to be fierce cunning warriors; and that death was best in battle. Athenians were more in numbers but they lacked Strategical Warfare. However both of them did worship Offspring of Zeus. Ares and Athena were brother and sister. The Rivalry of Athens and Sparta was a Sibling like rivalry at first. But in the end, Sparta forced Athens into surrender. Athens and Sparta did rule in other city states also.

What are the good things in Sparta?

Sparta had a strong military reputation in Ancient Greece. Despite the city not being democratic like Athens many philosophers from Athens believed that the Spartans had a better system of government than their own. Sparta had a more stable system and an army that could out drill, out march and out fight any other army in Greece. All male citizens were equals and there was no real division between rich and poor. Sparta is located in a fertile valley protected by nature by the mountains that surround her. Also because the men were often away at war, the women of Sparta were more free than their counterparts in other city-states including Athens.

Who Imagine you live in Ancient Greece. Would you rather live in Athens or Sparta Why?

It would depend entirely on your status: a. as a free male, if were you were free in Athens, you had to work hard at farming, fishing, a trade or a labourer; you were called out for military service as needed. In Sparta as a citizen, you were supported by the state on the income derived from a serf population, and devoted yourself . b. as a free woman, in Athens you had to bear and raise children, work in the house and farm or business, and were kept in virtual purdah. In Sparta you were free to come and go, and indulge in athletic and cultural events. c. If you were not a free male, in Athens as a slave you worked in the farm, house or business endless hours. In Sparta they were serfs who did their own thing but rendered half their produce to the Spartan state. d. If you were not a free female, you worked in the house and farm and were at the disposal of the owning male. In Sparta, the female serfs lived with their male partners. Take your pick.

How did the war between Athens and Sparta affect greek government?

Volumes could and have been written about this issue. I will only mention one thing, Athens was the cradle of democracy while Sparta was known for its strict military rule. Democracy spread from Greece to other countries but it took the whole of the middle ages to pass before the ancient ideas were actually implemented in full, although the establishment of parliament for example in England can be traced back to Greece in ancient times. Read all about this in history books of ancient Greece.
