Tone is the writer's attitude. You create tone automatically when you write for different audiences. It's caused by the author's choice of words, diction, syntax, level of writing, and anything else that conveys what the author thinks about the story, the readers, and everything else.

Tone in writing refers to the author's attitude or feelings toward the subject matter and audience. It is conveyed through the choice of words, sentence structure, and overall style of writing. Tone can be formal, informal, playful, serious, and so on, and it helps shape the reader's perception of the text.

Tone is the writer's attitude toward the material and/or readers. Tone may be playful, formal, intimate, angry, serious, ironic, outraged, baffled, tender, serene, depressed, etc. It ultimately depends on the material what the tone is, like if you have pride and prejudice the tone could be dramatic or serious depending on your textual evidence. Also there is no right or wrong answer, unless its seriously out there, you only have to justify your reasoning.

Exclamation marks, capital letters, adjectives, having a specific pattern in the way you talk, three periods in a row (...), etc.

Examples:

Slowly, the shadow creeped around the corner... and then, BOOM! I was knocked out.

Compared to:

I saw a shadow around the corner. Then I was knocked out.

See how the top one creates a more suspenseful/scary tone?
