Dr Edward Wilson and Ernest Shackleton went with Robert Scott on his first expedition to Antarctica, Discovery Expedition.Another AnswerScott learned from his first expedition, the Discovery expedition, more about what was important to bring, plan, and execute in their efforts to be the first to step foot at the South Pole. His second expedition, the Terra Nova expedition, was better planned and funded; he brought experienced and inexperienced people with him as his crew, and was careful to follow their plans...to a point.Ultimately, he violated his plans and it cost him his life: he died on his return trip from the South Pole.

Scott, the explorer, wanted to bring glory to England. The current news at the time was that the North Pole had already been 'conquered' -- reportedly by Cook in 1908 and Peary in 1909. Scott had been to Antarctica in the Discovery Expedition which left England in 1901. In 1910, he sailed again for Antarctica, and his 'conquest' of the South Pole.
It was mainly a scientific venture to chart and explore the unknown Antarctic landscape and to study wild life there. It was also to bring glory to Britain by being the first people to reach the South Pole. When asked Scott said that the scientific study was more important than reaching the pole, however, Scott and his crew knew that they would only be widely recognized and praised if they got there first.

Robert E. Lee. Both Scott and Lee were Virginians, but Scott stayed in the US Army, where he had served since 1808. Lee could not bring himself to possibly fight against his home state of Virginia, and a few days after Scott's offer, when Virginia seceded, Lee resigned and went south. Lee had served as a captain on Scott's staff during the Mexican War, and was instrumental in the success of Scott's expedition from Vera Cruz which captured Mexico City.
