Pompeii was a city buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the year 79 A.D.
The eruption also changed the course of the Sarno River and raised the sea beach, so that Pompeii was now neither on the river nor adjacent to the coast. Vesuvius itself underwent major changes - its slopes were denuded of vegetation and its summit changed considerably due to the force of the eruption.
After the eruption in Pompeii the entire town and surrounding areas were covered in pumice and ash. After the looters did their jobs the place was left alone and forgotten by the ancients.
They were covered in a thick blanket of ash.
Until the 1800's it was completely buried under 65 feet of ash and debris from the eruption. No one went there. Today you can visit the site and see how people lived.
Alot of the animals got away before it erupted because animals have heightened senses for some things than humans and they could sense something bad was going to happen. That was kind of a sign for the humans as well because they saw alot of the animals fleeing. but although some animals managed to flee, alot still got trapped by the lava and ash and there are shells of the animals in the ruins of pompeii. The animals were entombed in ash, debris and pumice, therefore DYING.
About 16,000 people where killed.
Sadly, 26 people died.
The 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. Most people died from smoke inhalation and suffocation.
In 1906, Mount Vesuvius erupted on the 7th April. The eruption was the largest in terms of lava ejection that the volcano is ever recorded as having spewed forth and it killed over 100 people.

Depending on the type of eruption people can't out run the volcanic eruption. Vesuvius in 79 AD had a pyroclastic eruption and the cloud,of gasses, rocks, and ash was 900 degrees and travelled 7 miles in seconds. It changed the coast line of Italy and covered 65 acres of farms, cities, plants, and animals. When the people breathed in the ash it mixed with the body fluids and turned to a cement suffocating them. Others, hiding in a boat house had their brains boil from the heat. Yet, in 1946 Vesuvius erupted and this time it had a slow moving lava. Towns were covered, but people did get away. In 79 it was impossible to run away once the final eruption began. Today, over a million people live under Vesuvius and Etna. They are monitored constantly and are watched for any signs of eruption .
