Some examples include:

• Cowboy culture (which in turn was inherited from Spanish settlers in the northern territories before Mexico became independent from Spain).
• Most cuisine from the southwest, usually known as Tex-Mex: chilli con carne is one such instance.
• Many words: adios, amigo, pronto, bronco, hombre, macho, mestizo, sierra, vanilla.
• Most of the southwest once belonged to Mexico. As such, many towns and cities have Spanish names: San Francisco, San Fernando, San Antonio, San Diego, Bellavista, Chulavista, Laredo, El Paso. These cities also include old (300 years or more) structures such as churchs, forts and buildings built before these territories were acquired by the US.
