Algae eats a lot of things. But being a plant you can be sure that it creates its own food through photosynthesis.
However, algae needs extra nutrients to help it along. Cheif among these are 2 things
1. Nitrates - produced through the nitrogen cycle, fish waste (ammonia) is converted by bacteria into nitrite, which is then converted by other types of bacteria into Nitrate. Algae will use nitrate as a fertilizer.
2. Phosphate - Phosphate can be found in many things, but certain types of algae begin to thrive when enough phosphate is present.
So that's what algae eats.

Plants, Algae, and Cyanobacteria photosynthesize. Also, many of the ocean's corals, sponges, and anemones (animals) live symbiotically with photosynthetic bacteria within their tissue. Some mollusks eat algae, then store the algae's chloroplasts in their bodies, allowing the mollusks to survive on photosynthesis for months.
Protists eat a variety of things. They eat bacteria, microscopic algae, dead organisms, as well as decaying matter in the ground.
