At the end of the Civil War, three notable Ohio generals were Ulysses S. Grant, who served as the commanding general of the Union Army and later became the 18th President of the United States; William Tecumseh Sherman, famous for his "March to the Sea" and a key figure in implementing total war strategies; and Philip Sheridan, known for his cavalry tactics and significant contributions in the Shenandoah Valley. These generals played pivotal roles in leading Union forces to victory and shaping the outcome of the war.

Three years later, due to his bad administration and spending habits, some Mexican generals staged a coup d'état and the republic was established in its place, with Guadalupe Victoria as the first Mexican president.
The US had three presidents that year. James Garfield replaced Hayes on March 4. Garfield was shot and then died on September 19 and Chester Arthur became president.
