Moses did not divide people into groups. The children of Israel were divided into tribes based on which son of Jacob(Israel) they descended from.
During the Middle Ages people lived by farming, under a system called feudalism. Feudalism was based on the ownership of land. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Europe was divided into small kingdoms, but real power belonged to local landowners. Central government was weak and people were often threatened by war. Nobles fought to defend their land and win more. People looked for defence, so freemen placed themselves under the protection of more powerful freemen. Those who did so were called vassals. That was how vassalage formed.
Feudalism in Europe began shortly after the fall of the roman empire. You see, after Rome was conquered, a lot of people fled the city and began to form groups in order to gain protection. These groups will eventually form kingdoms (although it will probably be a good idea for you to review feudalism vs. manorialism.) Remember that the Roman Catholic Church also began gaining power around this time.
People knew their roles in a rigid class system.
