Iron has atomic number 26, cobalt number 27 and nickel number 28. They are all in the 4th row of the periodic table in a large group called "transition metals." The column designations in the periodic table assign them to groups 8, 9, and 10 respectively. They have similar atomic weights; Fe 55.85, Co 58.93, and Ni 58.69 Atomic Mass units.

These elements are grouped together and given the "triad" identification largely because of their magnetic properties. All three have an unfilled d shell and in pure form all three are ferromagnetic, meaning they can form a permanent magnet. They are also metallic and conduct electricity and heat well.

Being in sequence in the periodic table, the atoms have 26, 27 and 28 electrons respectively. The electronic configuration consists of the inert 18-electron argon core formed by filling the 3s and 3p orbitals. The 4s orbital is filled with calcium and its 20 electrons and then starts the third-row transition metals as scandium (Sc) allows the 21st electron to start off the 3d subshell. The triad atom, near the center of the row of transition metals, have the atomic configurations of Fe [Ar] 4s2 3d6, Co [Ar] 4s2 3d7, Ni [Ar] 4s2 3d8.

In addition to sharing certain chemical and magnetic similarities, these three metals are frequently combined forming metal alloys with desirable characteristics that vary with concentration.

These elements, either together or separately, are often used in both common and exotic metal alloys which might also involve chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum, aluminum, titanium, zirconium, niobium, rhenium, carbon, boron or hafnium and others.

It is worth noting in passing that the iron 56 nucleus (56Fe) is the most stable of all nuclei and one of the most common heavy elements in the universe.
