As with anything else in Victorian Society, it depended on the social class into which one was born. Aristocratic women were expected to read and write, lean at least one foreign language, usually French, and be able to play music and run a household (deal with the servants). Women of the lower classes were taught to cook, clean, and sew, either to maintain their own homes or to work as servants in aristocratic ones. More progressive parents taught them reading, writing, and basic math. As the Victorian age grew, more and more young women were encouraged to have the same educations as young men, especially on the heels of the Women's Suffrage Movement.
