Luke 9:23 "Then he went on to say to all: "If anyone wants to come after me, let him disown himself and pick up his torture stake day after day and keep following me."

1. Disowning oneself includes allowing God to decide what is good and what is bad and not ourselves.

2. Picking up the torture stake would indicate that there will be many hardships if we are to surrender to Jesus and live the way he instructs. By us carrying our own torture device, it implies our determination to fight our own sinful inclinations and our willingness to shoulder the very thing that causes us to suffer or deprives us from fleshly pleasures.

3. To keep following him would imply a lifelong struggle that would take a great deal of endurance and faith.
