The time when Rome and her provinces were ruled by emperors is properly called the Principate. It is commonly called the "Roman Empire" in popular jargon, however this is not accurate as Rome was already an empire before the rule by the "emperors". Incidentally, the Romans themselves never used the word, emperor. Their head of state was always referred to by the title "Caesar".
