Preferably, on a regular schedule. My K9s and War Dogs eat at 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. with the amount adjusted for how heavily they've been working.
Barring the necessity of special diets, most important is keeping them on a regular schedule. They can tolerate large deviations when needed. But, vary it only if required and supplement with treats until you can next feed 'em.
