Autumn begins in the northern hemisphere in 2011 at 9:04am UTC (Greenwich Mean Time) on Friday, September 23. That is the astronomical definition though. There are different ways to define autumn...

Summer begins every year on the 21 of June.Summer does begin on June 21st in 2011, but it is not true that it begins every year on the 21st. Many people think that all seasons begin on the 21st of the month, but they do not. For example, in 2011, Spring began on March 20th. Summer will begin on June 21st, but Autumn will begin on September 23rd and Winter will begin on December 22nd (based on Eastern Time).
The best time of the year to go to Tokyo for sightseeing is in Spring and Autumn. In Spring and Autumn in Japan, the cherry blossom trees bloom and colors begin to show.

The answer to this depends on which definition of autumn is being used. In the northern hemisphere, the astronomical autumn begins September 23 at the time of the autumnal equinox. This date is sanctioned by the International Astronomical Union and can vary by a day or two from one year to the next. The climatological autumn begins September 1. This date is sanctioned by the World Meteorological Organization for the northern hemisphere and never changes. The ecological autumn begins locally whenever the leaves change colour and start to fall. This date varies from one region to another and can shift from one year to the next.
THE SIMPLE ANSWER IS: 09/23/2010.However, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory, the autumnal equinox (Autumn) begins on 09/23/2010 at 03:09 AM UTC (Universal Time Coordinated formerly known as Greenwich Mean Time). But I live the Eastern Time Zone which is 5 hours behind UTC. So technically Autumn for my time zone begins on 09/22/10 at 10:09 PM.It may be fine line, and therefore for the sake of simplicity and uniformity I am guessing that most calendars will simply show Autumn beginning on 09/23/10.
