It's called a transit and what you see is a small black circle crossing in front of the Sun as Venus. It takes up to 6 hours to move across. It can be seen by projecting the output from a telescope on to a white card. Never look through the telescope.

Transits of Venus occur in pairs spaced by 8 years. The last pair were in 2004 and 2012. The next ones will be in 2117 and 2125.

A transit occurs at inferior conjunction when Venus overtakes the Earth, passing in front of the Sun. Venus is at inferior conjunction every 584 days, but for a transit to occur Venus also must be at one of its nodes, when it happens to be crossing the ecliptic.
