The elf on the shelf stays until Christmas morning, and leaves Christmas night after you go to bed to head back to the north pole. This is different in some cases. For example, if you celebrate Christmas sometime after Christmas, the elf will usually stay until then.

∙ 8y agoWell, the Elf on the Shelf doesn't exactly go to the North Pole from Christmas Eve to Thanksgiving because only it's magical spirit leaves it's body and rests with Santa Claus for the rest of the year and gets it's spirit back on Thanksgiving.
