How are you diagnosis with autism?

" Autism is diagnosed based on clinical observation and testing by a professional using one or more standardized tests. Professionals most likely to diagnose autism are psychologists, psychiatrists, developmental pediatricians, and school psychologists. Some of the screenings and tests which may be used in the diagnostic process are: CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale), Autism Diagnostic Checklist Form E-2, CHAT (Checklist for Autism in Toddlers), M-CHAT (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers), Pervasive Developmental Disorders Screening Test -2, ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale), and ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview - Revised). In addition, parental interview and medical history are taken into consideration. The current version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) has specific criterion required to make a diagnosis of autism, or a Pervasive Development Disorder. There are five disorders under the PDD umbrella which include Autism, Aspergers, Rhett's Syndrome, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, and PDD-NOS (not otherwise specified). The diagnosis of autism may be made when a specified number of characteristics listed in the DSM-IV are present. "

Autistic disorder is a neurological and developmental disorder that usually appears during the first three years of life. A child with autism appears to live in their own world, showing little interest in others and a lack of social awareness. Can autism be overlooked as a child then be recognized in an adult?

Yes, as understanding of Autism changes diagnosis changes - people who are adults today may not have been recognized as being Autistic as children due to lack of awareness. I'll offer myself as an example: I'm diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and was clearly Autistic as a child: developmental delays, non-verbal, regular meltdowns, among other issues. In the 1980's Autism was still considered a 'boys disorder' and few people knew about Autism, thus I was not diagnosed and people didn't know what to make of my behavior. In the 1990's I had fewer issues with Autism, so although autism was better known my problems were not severe enough for people to have realized I was Autistic. In the late 1990's/early 2000's my school insisted I go to therapy due to my behavior, the therapists knew I was Autistic but didn't inform me or my parents, thus diagnosis wasn't made. I wasn't diagnosed until I was 28 years old, and that was only because I was working with disabled children at the time so I went looking for information and realized that I was Autistic.

does anyone know a good school for children with autism we live ini cocoa florida and have not had success with private or public school. (4 schools in 6 yrs)?

Your options are either public school or private school. It is not clear what you mean by "have not had success" and what exactly you require in a program. The law requires that public school must create a tailored education plan for children who have disabilities. Autism spans a broad range of talents, abilities and needs, so it is not possible to say without reservation that one program or another is most suitable for your particular situation. I have my Autism Spectrum son at Melbourne Central Catholic and LOVE it! The teachers are outstanding. I've been in Brevard County school district for 18 years with him and have not seen a better program. Although, I do have to mention that Einstein was great when he was in 6-8th grade.

Is there a school for boys with autism?

There are very few specific schools that are strictly for autism, however there are special education schools. I work with someone who sends their child to a special school that knows how to treat autism as well as other learning disorders. They have special training in how to teach kids with different abilities. Try looking into a school more like this and you should be able to find one.
