The amount of time one should put into party planning depends on how big and extravagant the party is. If it's just a weekend get together, inviting people a week ahead and making sure you have enough food and drink during that week should suffice. If it's a year end bash, generally you should start month's in advance.
The joke "Did you hear about the mushroom at the party?" shouldn't end with "No." The punchline should pertain to something with mushrooms.
