Cabbage white butterflies primarily feed on nectar from various flowering plants. In their caterpillar stage, they feed on brassica plants, including cabbage, broccoli, and kale, which gives them their common name.
The white butterflies are commonly referred to as "cabbage butterflies" or "cabbage whites," belonging to the Pieridae family. The most recognized species are the Cabbage White (Pieris rapae) and the Large Cabbage White (Pieris brassicae). They are often found in gardens and agricultural areas, where their larvae feed on plants in the cabbage family. Their distinctive white wings with black tips make them easily identifiable.
Cabbage white butterflies have various predators, including birds such as sparrows, finches, and robins. Insects like dragonflies, spiders, and wasps also feed on cabbage white butterfly eggs and caterpillars. Additionally, small mammals like shrews and mice may prey on these butterflies.
I'm usually trying to get the small white cabbage butterfly to vacate my garden, as their babies eat all the cabbage relatives plus a few other vegetables. As adults they get food from flower nectar. If you see the white cabbage on fruit, there is no reason not to let them partake of the sweetness. The female can live up to 3 weeks.
A cabbage white butterfly, like all butterflies, has three sets of legs, totaling six legs. However, it's worth noting that the front pair of legs in many adult butterflies, including the cabbage white, is often reduced in size and may not be used for walking. Instead, these butterflies primarily use their hind legs for movement and grasping.
Cabbageworms are the larvae of butterflies, specifically the Cabbage White butterfly. They primarily feed on plants in the Brassica family, which includes crops like cabbage, broccoli, kale, and cauliflower. Cabbageworms can cause damage to these plants by eating the leaves.
It depends upon where you live. In many parts of the world, the white butterflies flying around are Cabbage White butterflies. In southern Florida, it would be the Great Southern White butterfly. Another white butterfly species that flies around the sides of the road in the US are Checkered White butterflies.
The cabbage white butterfly only lives for a short period of about two weeks after they emerge from the chrysalis. They have lovely white wings that are edged in charcoal gray.
