Following infant circumcision, vaseline and a gauze pad are put on the penis after a circumcision. This covering protects it from pee and from rubbing against the diaper. * During the first 24 hours, check your baby's penis for bleeding every 3 to 4 hours. Change the Vaseline and gauze pad every time you check for bleeding. * After the first 24 hours, change the Vaseline and gauze pad every time you change your baby's diaper. Vaseline and gauze pads should be used for 1 to 3 more days. * The amount of Vaseline you use should be about the size of a dollar coin ("a loonie"). * If the gauze pad sticks to the penis, do not pull it off. Squeeze warm water over the gauze pad from a wet washcloth. This will soak the gauze pad off the penis. * Wash the area after your baby pees or poops. Squeeze warm water from a washcloth over the area. Gently pat dry. * In 2 to 3 days, the tip of your baby's penis will be covered with a sticky yellow substance. This substance is normal. Do not remove it. * The tip of your baby's penis will be a deep red color while it is healing. * The tip of your baby's penis should be fully healed in one week. It will have a pinkish color when it is healed. * Your baby may not want to eat after the circumcision. You can continue to offer a breast or bottle. He will begin to eat when he is ready. * Your baby may not pee for a number of hours after the circumcision. This is normal. * Blood around the penis is bright red and is soaking through the gauze pad onto the diaper. * Your baby has not peed for 24 hours after the circumcision.

Circumcision is associated with a series of adverse events. The most common are pain, bleeding, and infection following circumcision. Some men report pain for weeks following circumcision, and even months after circumcision, some men report pain during sexual intercourse. As circumcision is a surgical procedure, it is associated with all the of adverse outcomes of anesthesia. Each year there are cases of surgical mistakes during circumcision that can result in damage to the penis, and in rare cases even accidental amputation of the penis can occur. For most men, pain resolves within a few weeks following surgery, but many men report reduced penile sensitivity (especially to the glans or head of the penis) and decreased pleasure during sexual activity.

Circumcision caries with it serious risks of adverse outcomes including prolonged bleeding, infection, severe pain, and surgical error that can result in damage to the penis. For these reasons most physicians recommend against circumcision. Circumcision can have long lasting consequences. Circumcision removes a normal part of the penis that functions to protect the glans of the penis. Removal of the foreskin can cause decreased sensitivity of the penis and decreased pleasure during sexual intercourse. Circumcision is far less common now in the United States than it once was. During the 1970s and 1980, around 80% of male infants were circumcised in the United States. A study conducted in the United States from 2005-2007 found that circumcision rates had fallen to below 40% in most of the United States. In the western United States, fewer than 25% of infant males were circumcised in 2005-2007.

After circumcision, the wound should be washed daily. An antibiotic ointment or petroleum jelly may be applied to the site. If there is an incision, a wound dressing will be present and should be changed each time the diaper is changed.

Take care to keep it clean and dry, if it is the penis of a new baby take care that there is not excessive bleeding, it takes very little blood for a new born to bleed to death. it happens on a reasonably regular basis. there is litle information available on the trauma and post traumatic stress that accompanies the procedure.
