• A man should never hit a woman even if she is hitting him. Most men are brought up never to hit a woman. The man can walk out the door and never come back. A man hitting a woman is physically abusive and the hitting will turn to beatings and it's a form of brutal control of any woman. Get as far away from this man as you can! If you are stuck and when he is not around you can phone Mental Health in your area and they will give you good advice. There are generally Abused Women's Centers in most larger towns or cities that will help abused women get out of a bad situation by protecting her and any children she may have.

Do not use violence back. Tell them it wasn't nice.

If it was spousal abuse, do not stand for it. This is a different kind of hitting. This kind is not based on a temporary lack of judgment due to provocation or emotion. It is a control reaction. The hitter knows that if he/she physically or emotionally assaults the other, they are very likely to get their way. If the victim does not realize this and does something to escape this situation, they are never going to break out of this pattern of abuse.
