When GOOD scientists think they have a made a scientific breakthrough, the first thing they do is discuss the ideas or results with other scientists, basically asking, "Where did I make a mistake in this idea or result?" This is basically what CERN did last year when they found evidence of neutrinos going faster than light speed -- which, IF THE OBSERVATION WAS CORRECT, would have been a major breakthrough. CERN recently found that they had, indeed, made a mistake -- and readily admitted it.

SLOPPY scientists, on the other hand, call a news conference to discuss with the media how they made their breakthrough -- like the "cold fusion" scientists of 1989.
