Most people who are allergic to cats are allergic to their dander, the dried and dead skin cells that they shed along with their fur. There are some treatments you can take that will decrease your sensitivity to cat dander; however, they require prescriptions. Consult your doctor.
As an alternative, you can look into Sphinx and Cornish Rex cats. These cats have extremely short fur and as a consequence seem to trigger less of a reaction in most allergy sufferers.
