Hermit crabs have exoskeleton so they need to shed it and that is called molting. They need to dig underground it can take weeks to months so DONT dig it up. if you think it is dead and it smells like dead fish then it is dead.

Some signs of molting is exessive eating, digging, drinking, bathing, and a sack under it's claws (for storing up food for when it will molt underground.

After they are don't molting they will have their old exoskeleton DONT take it away it has ALOT of vitamins it will need i know it's gross but let them eat it.

Do hermit crabs stay in their shells when they molt?

Yes, the hermit crab remains in it's (outer) sea shell/home when it molts. However, when the hermit crab molts it sheds it's old exoskeleton much like a snake sheds it's skin, pushing the old exoskeleton out of the sea shell, and forms a new exoskeleton. The new exoskeleton is soft at first and takes time to harden. The hermit crab's "tail and belly" section remains soft and vulnerable requiring a hard outer shell/sea shell for protection.

How did the hermit crab gets its name?

It's term 'hermit' is not because it doesn't like other hermit crabs. The hermit crab actually loves being with other hermits. It is called hermit crab because it is only one hermit crab in the shell. It's term 'hermit' is not because it doesn't like other hermit crabs. Can a hermit crab die from its shell breaking?

Congratulations! No need to rename it. It's the same hermit crab. It molted it's old skin! This means your hermit crab is perfectly healthy and can grow! Make sure you have a slightly bigger shell though. Leave it alone until it walks around and is very healthy.

Are hermit crabs repitles?

No, they are invertebrates, meaning they need to molt their skin to grow an example is a snake, they don't grow, they molt their skin to grow, just like the hermit crab.
