What to do with a person having heart attack?

1. Ensure that the "scene" (for example room) is safe. If it is not safe, do not enter.

2. Stay as calm as possible (very important; panicking will NOT help ).

3. Call for an ambulance (if there is another person in the room you can send him/her to call the ambulance).

Note: If the person was unconscious when you entered the room, the first step is to check for a response (eg. call his/her name) and then call for an ambulance (in this case you should expect that it is a heart attack but unless you know that it was a heart attack, do not say for certain that it was a heart attack; it should not be ruled out as a possibility though however).

4. Place casualty on the floor with back against the wall, feet flat and knees pointed towards the ceiling.

5. Open clothing around the neck and waist (this will help the persons breathing).

6. Give casualty one aspirin or disprin tablet (place it in a glass of water or give him/her the tablet and ask him/her to chew it slowly). Note: If the person has medication for his heart, help him to take the medication.

7. Monitor and reassure until professional (medical) help arrives.

Do NOT:

• Panic.
• Enter the room if it is not safe. (If there is a hazard or danger, call for help, for example, if there is a fire call for the local fire service).
• Leave the person in the room (unless you are going to call for help).
• Give him/her anything to eat or drink (apart from the water and disprin or aspirin tablet). You should also allow him to take his medication if he has it.
• Let the person move around (eg. walk around the room) as this will put his heart under more pressure.
• Assume that it was a heart attack (unless you are 100% sure), you need to leave the medical professional/s to diagnose the problem.

It has been proven that if you are alone with no help, coughing can increase the chances of your survival. This is because when you cough, all your muscles around your heart contract , it is almost like self CPR. It is no guarantee but always have emergency no1 on your speed dial. Even if you cannot talk they can work out where you are. Coughing every 4 seconds is the same as some one trying to give you CPR.
