Protein and fiber are important in helping an individual feel full as well as have energy. Fruits and vegetables provide vitamins and minerals as well as complex carbs (important for athletes, especially runners). I have heard that eating fats (healthy ones like the ones listed above) enhance the amount of nutrients that the body is able to absorb when it eats fruits and vegetables (i.e. when eating a salad, olive oil, or canola oil, help to absorb more nutrients than red wine vinegar).
