The resume is all about your skills and professional experience. If you know, recruiters spend only an average of 6.25 secs (as found in a survey by a leading job site), therefore you must have skills which make you stand out. And in these quick seconds, just some important points are scanned in your resume, namely your name, current organization, previous organizations, start and end dates and education. So if you have taken a year off and added new skills in this gap, it's surely going to catch your recruiters' attention. Clearly and honestly mention the education break in your resume. And do not forget to add the degree/diploma earned in your resume. The cut throat completion in the job market actually makes taking study breaks to add new skills. So no worries.

How do you punctuate this sentence We will keep your resume on file for one year in the event that an opportunity arises?

We will keep your resume on file for one year in the event that an opportunity arises. However, if you don't want to look like you are promising future consideration, you should simply say: We will keep your resume on file for one year. Or: We will keep your resume on file for one year for future reference.

How do you punctuate the sentence We will maintain your resume for one year in the event that an opportunity arises?

The sentence itself needs work; it infers that you will keep the applicant's resume for one year if an opportunity arises. It would be better written, "We will maintain your resume for one year. In the event that an opportunity arises, we will contact you."
