WoW, I have a 2.5 ton unit for my 1,100 sq. ft home in Florida. I think you are way underpowered. They say 1 ton for every 500 square feet.
The answer given is typical, common, and usually incorrect. Many people get dramatically over-powered units that ends up short-cycling and thus not removing humidity properly, and uses more electricity than necessary...plus costs more upfront.
