They used linen sacks, skeps and clay.

The sacks were to transfer a colony from the wild to the bee keeper's skep - this was a cone-shaped hive with a small doorway and an open base, made of coiled plaited straw. The clay was used to make a temporary base for the hive.

It is likely that some form of veil and gloves were worn when attending the skeps.
