In the colonial days, shoes could be worn on either foot. A last was a wooden mold that was used to shape the shoe because they could be worn on either foot. An awl was a tool used to punch holes in the leather before they stitched the holes together. They used a needle from stiff boar hair. They also used pegs to fasten the sole to the upper part of the shoe as well as special knives to shape the leather sole.
