What transforms a LAN to a WAN?

LAN (Local Area Network) is different to a WAN (Wide Area Network) in that a WAN is a network that joins two different LANs.

e.g. You may have two office, one in London and one in Manchester. They will have their own LANs. If they link their networks together it will become a WAN.
