The 1988-1992 1.6 Engines are interchangeable. The automatic engines can also be used, but you'd need to use your flywheel in place of the flexplate. The distributor for either engine is interchangeable, however, there were two different distributors used. The later style has a nice, single plug-type connector, while the older 1988 connector has separate wires with spade connectors. If you use your existing distributor, it will work with your existing wiring harness and all will be good. Not for you, but in case someone reads this who has the automatic transmission. To use an engine with a manual transmission in an automatic car, there is an ear that you may have to remove (grind) from the block to get the transmission to mate up. It will be obvious when you try it.
