The speed of sound in dry air at 20 °C (68 °F) is 343 meters per second (768 mph). There are several things that travel quicker than this speed, some being:

  • visible light
  • radio waves travel at the speed of light
  • electrical signals guided by wires typically travel at roughly 2/3 the speed of light in a vacuum

  • When someone cracks a whip, the tip of the whip travels faster than sound.
  • The vactrain is an as-yet-unbuilt proposal for a railroad train that would travel faster than the speed of sound. Robert Goddard designed an early version in 1910.
  • Most modern guns shoot a bullet with a muzzle velocity faster than the speed of sound; some high-velocity bullets exit the muzzle at more than four times the speed of sound.
  • A few kinds of missiles, including many cruise missiles, can travel faster than sound.

The speed of light is almost a million times faster than the speed of sound. Lots of things are faster than the speed of sound. It is considered basically impossible for anything to travel faster than the speed of light.
