There are seven main ethnic groups or tribes in Afghanistan including the Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks, Turkmens, Nuristanis, and Baluchs.

Because at one time in Afghanistan's history, the region was not considered one single country, but rather many tribes and provinces. Added to this was the facet that most people in Afghanistan were (and still are) nomadic or semi-nomadic.

In the past, mass defections of army units to their original tribes always have been common when the central government got into power struggles with local war lords or tribal interests.
