There can be many triggers of depression.

It could be that a loss of positive reinforcement occurs, such as a loss of job or a loss of a loved one. This event halts the chances of being positively reinforced - for example, a promotion. The person thus falls into a state of depression, they may feel that there is a lack of control over their lives and also feel that they are to blame.

A person with depression may attribute negative events that occur in every day life to themselves, they may feel that they are to blame for every little thing that goes wrong in life, as a result of this depression worsens. This depression could also then be reinforced by others in forms of sympathy and the depression can again, worsen.
