There are two sphincter muscles, one controls food going into the stomach from the esophagus (throat) and one that controls the chime, or the food after being treated by stomach acid and enzymes in the stomach, as it enters the intestines. Food is not digested in the stomach. It is prepared there and sent through the intestines, where the various components are absorbed or further treated and absorbed. It is quite complex.
