Pioneer families tended to settle in communities along major rivers primarily because rivers allowed boats along that carried goods plus water was needed to sustain life. The rivers provided power, food, travel and trade routes.

B/c the ground is usually flat along rivers, which makes road construction easy. And before there were roads, people often traveled by boats. And people who travel by boat tends to settle nopt too far from the river. Once you have the settlements there, the road has to follow the river if it's to be of any use to the people already living there.
Rivers provide drinking water, fish to eat, easy transportation in boats, water for crops.
