Roman coins were used primarily to purchase things. The secondary purpose of a coin was to "advertise" something. One side of a coin would have a man's head, usually the emperor, but other famous men were also depicted, especially during the republic. The other side of the coin would have an inscription and a picture of something that the guy on the other side did. For example, when Octavian conquered Egypt, his head was on one side and the other had symbols of Egypt.
