Vascular Tissue

Most seed plants live on land. Recall from Chapter 4 that land plants face many challenges, including standing upright and supplying all their cells with food and water. Like ferns, seed plants meet these two challenges with vascular tissue. The thick walls of the cells in the vascular tissue help support the plants. In addition, food, water, and nutrients are transported throughout the plants in vascular tissue.

There are two types of vascular tissue. Phloem (floh um) is the vascular tissue through which food moves. When food is made in the leaves, it enters the phloem and travels to other parts of the plant. Water and minerals, on the other hand, travel in the vascular tissue called xylem (zy lum). The roots absorb water and minerals from the soil. These materials enter the root's xylem and move upward into the stems and leaves.

With a vascular system, plants could grow larger. With a vascular system one part of the plant could take in water and nutrients and the nutrients and water could be moved to other parts of the plant, even over long distances (trees)

With out a vascular system plants are dependent on diffusion of nutrients between the cells, which need to be in close contact with the source of water and nutrients.

They are able to live in areas with less water, because the vascular system enables them to have structures like roots that can absorb water in the ground as well as save nutrients for droughts etc. Also, the vascular system gives plants more structure and allows them to grow taller, thicker, and be more resilient against the weather.

What tissue is responsible for growth in angiosperms?

The two kind of vascular tissue angiosperms have would be the Monocot vascular bundles distributed througout the stem and the Dicot vascular bundles arranged in circles!

What vascular tissue?

The vascular tissue system is one of three tissue systems that make up a plant, the other two tissue systems or ground and dermal, with dermal tissue being the outer layer and the ground tissue making up most of the inside of a plant. Vascular tissue is surrounded by ground tissue, but vascular tissue doesn't make up much of the inside of a plant, this is because vascular tissue transports water, mineral nutrient , and organic compounds, to all parts of a plant. Plants don't depend entirely on the vascular tissue system for transportation, the plants themselves can transport any necessary fluids and/or nutrients throughout their systems. A plant's vascular system is composed of two networks of hollow tubes, similar to our veins and arteries. Each network consists of a different type of vascular tissue that works to move different resources throughout the plant. These vascular tissues would be the tissues known as xylem and phloem.

What is the vascular tissue (xylem)?

Vascular tissues are plant tissues that transport nutrients and water throughout a plant. The two types of vascular tissues are xylem and phloem.

List two ways that seedless vascular plants are important to the environment?

They denigrate, making good soil. Then other plants can grow there.

What is the function of a vascular tissue in a plant?

There are two types of vascular tissue in a plant. Phloem, which conveys food from the leaves to the rest of the plant, and xylem which conveys water from the roots to the rest of the plant.
