He rode about 5 miles and was stopped on the road to Lexington , so he didn't get there. We only know about him because Longfellow wrote a poem in 1861 on the eve of the civil war to remind people of their history .

Are you sure you do mean shank's mare which is a term for going on foot ? It is a kind of joke to say something like "we rode shank's mare" meaning we had to walk.

I believe it's a type of horse, probably a type of specially bred war horse. From the books I have read I take it they are spirited, difficult to ride, and very large.
