An oxygen atom is located in the 16th period of the periodic table so its outermost

level of electrons(level 2) contains 6 electrons which is two less then eight. So, in order for oxygen to fill its outermost level it needs to gain two electrons, or in this case, form a covalent bond with another oxygen atoms this is why an oxygen atom has a subscript of 2.
