You need internet service to go online. You must either have wireless or ethernet wired hookup to the internet. I used a wireless router connected with ethernet cable to my cable modem. When I didn't like losing the connection I then also used a 50 foot Cat 6 Ethernet cable from one of the 4 wired spots on the back of the CISCO LINKSYS WRT 160N wireless router to my PS3. I noticed improvements in the connection speeds with the PS3 tests using a wired connection and recommend using a wired connection.

One example is that one of my laptops can wirelessly go on the internet through my router in another room. My desktop computer is wired to the router using an ethernet cable - so is not a wireless connection. It two devices can talk to each other, yet there is not a cable connecting them, then that is an example of a wireless (commonly called wifi) connection.
The differences between cable and wireless internet is that, when it is "cable" internet a physical cable is connected between the computer and the router. Whereas the "wireless" internet is wireless, it sends information through the air to your computer.
The USB cable is about 50 cm to a metre.
connect the cable modem to PC using the usb port, leaving you the ethernet porton on the cable modem to connect to the wireless router.
