Think of it this way, water is piped to your house, your electric is wired to your house. If you have Cable wired to your house you can use this for a "land line." Some areas do not have cable wired to houses, but in most of those cases, they do have telephone service wired to their house. This can also act as a "land line." If you're lucky enough to have FIOS wired to your house-that's groovy. However, as long as you have some form of land line wired to your house you should be able to get service through it. Find a Broadband or DSL internet provider or if you already have one and are already using it connect a router to your modem. Then simple connect an ethernet cable from your modem to your router and one from your router to your PS3. The cable that was going from the modem to your computer now goes from your router to your computer. If you are not using the internet service before then just connect th ethernet cable from your new modem to the PS3. Then if you do get a computer just buy the router and the ethernet cables then.

You need internet service to go online. You must either have wireless or ethernet wired hookup to the internet. I used a wireless router connected with ethernet cable to my cable modem. When I didn't like losing the connection I then also used a 50 foot Cat 6 Ethernet cable from one of the 4 wired spots on the back of the CISCO LINKSYS WRT 160N wireless router to my PS3. I noticed improvements in the connection speeds with the PS3 tests using a wired connection and recommend using a wired connection.
