The Achumawi were also known as Pit River Indians and lived in close proximity to the Shasta and Atsugewi groups in the areas that became northern California and southern Oregon. They had elements of both the Oregon and Californian cultures in their clothing.
Men wore a shapeless overtunic of deerskin, sometimes with a belt, plus a kilt or apron and occasionally deerskin leggings. Women wore a one-piece wraparound skirt of deerskin, combined with a simple poncho-style top. Moccasins were only used when travelling. Winter cloaks were made of shredded tule or juniper bark and possibly of rabbit fur in some areas. Women apparently wore flat-topped basket hats like those of the Modoc, while men wore a variety of fur caps.
