Elephants are highly social creatures. They communicate with and touch each other a lot.
They live in groups called herds and have a matriarchal dominated society. This means usually, that the oldest, most able female is the leader and she teaches the rest of the herd everything that she knows about life and survival. She leads them to water that is along their seasonal migratory paths; she teaches them when to migrate and familiarizes them with the paths they need to take and the pitfalls they need to avoid. She shows them where the best food is. This knowledge is passed down from one matriach to the next. When conditions are especially bad, she will change up the herd's regular behavior and take them to water where she may be the only one old enough to remember its location.
Elephant mothers look out for each other's babies, too. In fact, not only do baby elephants have mothers, but they also have "aunties". Their real aunts and their own older sisters help raise and protect them.
On the other hand, sub-adult males (they're like teenage boys) can hang with them until they start making trouble and acting up. Then the females kick them out to go find other males to join up with.
Elephants form lifelong bonds with each other.
