Like Cisco routers, most Cisco switches run IOS, and can be configured in a similar way. Older non-IOS switches still use the console port to configure them, just like the routers.

Some recommended books about Cisco routers are: Cisco Router Configuration, Cisco Routers For The Desperate, Cisco Routers for IP Router, Cisco CCNA Routing and Switching.
A Cisco 7500 router is a chassis containing RSP blades and interface blades. The interface blades contain the actual working router ports, the RSP blades run the router IOS. At least one RSP is present per router, and each RSP has (like most Cisco routers) one console port and one auxiliary port. The other RSP, when present, acts only like a failover device.

The ISL protocol can be used in Cisco routers when configuring the subinterfaces.
Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) was once as Cisco Propitiatory routing protocol for Cisco routers. However many routers that are not Cisco now support the use of EIGRP.
Cisco business grade routers and switches use what is called IOS its a command based os meaning you have to enter commands to configure. There are console ports you can connect to a computer to a router where you can have direct access with the router via putty or hyper terminal (there might be more programs). once you set up like this you have access to the ios command line interface.
