Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) is a stand by battery. Charged with mains power, it is designed to give out DC current should the mains power suddenly goes off, long enough for computers to be shut down properly, so avoiding corruption of data and the computer system. I believe that in some larger commercial/military/Government organisations, an inverter DC to AC is in their larger capacity UPS systems, to continue on AC until the mains power is restored.

Another Answer

A UPS is often used to supply computers, in order to protect their data in the event of a power failure. They consist, essentially, of a battery charger, a rechargeable battery, and an inverter. The main power supply maintains the charge on a battery, via a battery charger, and the battery's output is converted to an a.c. output via an inverter. Voltage values are maintained by internal Transformers.

How much can you power on a 2.5kva generator?

It can supply 2.5 kW to a load with a power factor of 1. Otherwise the power available must be multiplied by the power factor which is always less than 1. If uncertain assume 0.8 which makes it 2 kW.

How do you correct the power factor of a capacitor power supply?

Assuming the question refers to a capacitor-input power supply with a transformer, rectifier and reservoir capacitor, the problem is caused by the high peak currents which flow for only a part of the ac cycle while the capacitor is charging. Thus the poor power factor is not caused by the usual difference in phase between the voltage and the current, which is easily corrected. This being the case the power-factor can't easily be corrected and this type of power supply is confined to low-power applications of less than 1 kW.

What is the symbol of power factor?

There is no SI symbol, as such, for power factor. As power factor is the cosine of the phase angle (the angle by which the load current leads or lags the supply voltage), power factor is normally written as 'cos' followed by the lower-case Greek letter we pronounce 'phi' (I've no idea how to type a Greek letter in this answer!).

A power supply receives what type of power?

It depends on the type of power supply. A power supply used in a desktop computer is generally supplied with AC (Alternating Current) and produces several levels of regulated DC (Direct Current) voltages required by the electronic circuits.

Why does an amplifier need a power supply?

The power supply in either a guitar amplifier or in a professional sound amp reduces the 110v alternating current to a direct current. Also it reduces the voltage that can be used by the speakers, usually 12+ volts. Also if there where no power supply and there could be a possible way of reducing the voltage that could be used in the same was a direct current, you would here a constant phasing type noise from the current alternating. A power supply unit converts power that can be used in correctly in sound frequencies.

What type of electrical current does a notebook require and what device provides this current?

A notebook computer generally requires direct current. This current comes from a battery or a power supply. A battery converts chemicals into electricity, while a power supply or battery charger converts somewhat high voltage alternating current into lower voltage direct current.

What activities are lost when the electrical supply is cut off?

All activity that depends upon an electrical supply to operate will cease. To overcome this type of situation standby generators and uninterrupted power supplies are used until the electrical supply is re-established.

What is an electrical power inverter?

The most usual type of electrical power inverter is an electronic device which converts a direct current supply - often at a low voltage such as 12 or 24 volts as is used in a vehicle - to a higher voltage alternating current such as 120 or 240 volts which can be used to supply power to a household electrical appliance. Inverters do what the name implies: they invert one type of power source to another type such as from DC (direct current) to AC (alternating current). In addition inverters can be used to convert a power source to a different level [VOLTAGE]. No matter what type is involved, because no inverter'e efficiency can ever be near to 100%, there will always be some loss of energy from the power that is supplied to the input to the power that is available at the output, but that is a small price to pay for the convenience of using an inverter.

Diode reverse breakdown14v current of 70mA and an un-stabilised supply voltage of 28v calculate resistance?

If a circuit element has a voltage of 14V and a current of 70mA, then the resistance of the circuit element is 200 ohms. This is ohm's law. The resistance or type of the power supply is meaningless.

What type of electric current does a power plant generate for use in your home?

generally power plants produce ALTERNATING CURRENT,because after producing the current the are sent to substations where they are stepped up or stepped down.so a transformer is mainly used over there.for a transformer we cant supply direct current.we should supply only alternating current.so they only produce alternating current................... 4RM PRAJITH

What is the function of a DC power supply?

By Khalid BetaniDirect current (DC) is the unidirectional flow of electric charge. Direct current is produced by sources such as batteries, thermocouples, solar cells, and commutator-type electric machines of the dynamo type.So the function of a DC Power Supply is to provide Direct current to various accessories of computer such as Hard Disk, Ram, Picture Tube or LCD, Mother Board, CD Rom/DVD Rom, etc, so that they function properly.

What is fuction of power supply?

The power supply makes the computer run, without any type of power supply it would be impossible to run a computer. The mains power supply for a laptop and the power supply unit of a desk top, both convert the high AC voltage from the mains power and convert it to low voltage DC, for the electronics of a computer to use.
