It would represent continuous data, rather than discrete data. Continuous data would be something like height, which increases by fractional amounts, and since a line can represent any length between 5 and 6 ft. (like 5.25 or 5.379) a line is used to represent height. Number of customers would be discrete data, represented by discontinuous dots, since you can only have whole customers, and not parts of customers. Between 5 and 6 customers, there would be no line, since a line would show that there can be parts of customers between 5 and 6.
