There is no actual general breed of dog that is silent, it depends on the dog individual personality. For example, my Labrador never actually barked until he was a little over a year old, but my neighbor's Labrador barks 24/7.

If you want a quiet dog, I suggest looking for a breed that doesn't need a lot of running space --as hyper dogs tend to be the chattiest-- and get them as a puppy, so you can mold it's personality easier.

or, you can get a oldish dog, as dogs tend to mellow out as they get older as well.

All dogs have a different bark but larger dogs will probably have a deeper maybe louder bark and a smaller dog would have more of a higher pitched bark but it all depends on type of dog and age of dog. How loud can beagles bark?

Beagles generally do more howling than barking. Yes, the bark is annoying- but the howling is much worse. Beagles will howl at just about anything- people walking by, strange noises, or because they feel like it. The only way to stop a beagle from howling is to train it to lay down on command. Beagles cannot howl when laying down. I do not know if bark collars work, but sonic bark machines can help. Basically, beagles are not good as pets. They are hard to train, escape often and are bad for rummaging through garbage. They also howl a lot, and will upset neighbors. Such a pity, as they are certainly a handsome dog.
